Gunn Estate Pinot Noir 2008

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Damn, that is some tasty shit, yo.

Some Pinot Noirs can be nasty. But this one is superb. Highly recommended, 5/5.

3 New Zealand Wines:

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Today I have 3 New Zealand Wines for you:

Stop Banks Merlot 2006:

I bought this wine as it was on special. Apparently it wasn’t selling and so was now a clearance line. My lucky day! An excellent Merlot, exactly what I’d expect from a 2006. 4/5.

Five Flax Merlot Cabernet 2007:

A decent, non-offensive (and reasonably cheap) everyday drinking wine. Recommended. 4/5.

Montana Reserve Chardonnay Pinot Noir Brut Cuvée:

This is a superior sparkling white wine in the champagne style. A fusion between Lindauer Special Reserve Brut Cuvée and Jacob’s Creek Chardonnay Pinot Noir. (Dry and Fruity for the uninitiated.) I purchased this bottle for $15.99 on special. Not a bad price for such a good wine.

Highly recommended 5/5.

New Zealand Red Wine Reviews

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Woolshed Red 2005:

This tasty Hawke’s Bay Red is a real winner. My first thoughts upon drinking it were "Holy shit!" :) That is how good this wine was. Super smooth, great taste and no horrendous after taste. Pretty cheap too, 5/5.

Selak’s Premium Selection Merlot 2007:

I think this wine may have gone off, because it was truly foul. I had to tip most of the bottle down the sink. Ever taken a sip of juice that has either been out of the fridge too long or simply gone off? That sort of fizzy disgusting taste was at the start of every sip of this wine. Avoid at all costs. 0/5.

Two more New Zealand Wines

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

First up is Sacred Hill Syrah 2007. One of the best wines I’ve tasted. Incredibly smooth. If there is a scale with cheap Merlot at one end ("robust") then this wine would be at the other end. Not too expensive either, 5/5.

The second wine today is Ngatarawa Silks Merlot 2006. I had a bottle of this a few months ago and really enjoyed it. The second bottle was not quite like I remembered, but still tasty. 3.5/5.

Lindauer Special Reserve "Blanc de Blancs"

Possibly my most favourite Champagne style wine ever. It is a dry wine and it has a very nice taste. Highly recommended 5/5. (Buy it on special and it should be $10-$13.)

Matua Valley Merlot Cabernet 2007:

One of my favourite cheaper red wines. At only $10.99 on special it’s incredible value. The taste is not overpowering and does not linger for half an hour like cheap, shit wine. 4 stars.

1769 Pinot Noir 2007:

Superb Pinot Noir from Central Otago. $21.99 on special. Fortunately I got it for free. Highly recommended, but obviously not an everyday wine at that price. 4.5 stars.

Mill Road Merlot Cabernet Franc:

For under $10 on special this wine is surprisingly tasty. It also kept it’s flavour pretty well for a few days after the bottle was opened. I wouldn’t buy a case, but it’s great when you just feel like a random glass one evening. Call it a "week day wine". 4 stars.
